How to Jump-Start Another Car

Jumper cables are an inexpensive item to keep in your vehicle’s emergency kit. They don’t take up much space, and with a little understanding and practice, you will be able to use them without a problem. The first thing to be aware of is that the two clamps on each end represent a positive and negative charge. The next thing is to be careful not to touch any other metal once you’ve started connecting them.

You begin by connecting the red/positive cable to the dead battery. Follow that with the black/negative cable. Continue the same process on the good battery. Once they’re connected, let them charge for a minute or two. Rev the engine of the running vehicle and try to start the dead car. It should start within a couple of attempts. If it doesn’t. there may be another issue with the electrical system. It’s best at that point to have your vehicle serviced.
