How to Change Out Your Car's Flat Tire

If you have a tire go flat and you're safely off the road, here's how you can put a spare on yourself if you have everything you need to do so:

  • Only try to place a spare if you have safe conditions. A flat, paved surface. Your car could roll if it's on a hill.
  • Turn the engine off. Make sure the emergency or park brake is on.
  • Find your jack, spare tire, and necessary tools.
  • Before using the jack, loosen the lug nuts.
  • Lift the car with the jack.
  • Take off the lug nuts and wheel.
  • Place the spare. Make sure the wheel and lug nuts are secure.
  • Lower the car.
